"The moth was fighting for its life"
Field-notes 9/12
Taken by Marlyn Arce
According to National Geographic :"Black Widow Spiders" the black widow used its fangs and administer digestive enzymes to puncture the month and suck up its inside fluid. The black widows prey are usually flies, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, beetles and caterpillars (though apparently they get moths for dessert.) The YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRnCeg-EWio#! which I recommend deeply to watch, gives the specific information on what the spider does to the moth. It even includes a little extra for the guys to be aware off. (Go females!;]) My reaction on everything was surprised! The way the spider jabbed the moth reminded me of ninjas hitting someones pressure point. Her legs were like chopsticks winding her food together. Her actions and quickness in everything, reminded me of strong, confident women I know of. Sadly the black widow has disappeared and I wasn't able to see more of its unique qualities. Working with what I have I noticed that the spider wasn't dependent on anything or anyone to live. She built her own web, found her own food, killed her prey herself . She knew she had her own duties to fulfil, wasn't waiting for someone tell her "theres a moth go kill it!" She was even responsible for her outcome of the whole process. She left the moth at her web, hidden. I really tried looking for it but didn't find until a few days later.
"the moth was on the ground as if it no loner satisfied anything, little did it know that it benefited me" Field-notes 9/17 |
Maybe it was the spiders instincts or maybe she was taught that but we should be responsible for our own duties as she was. We have responsibilities that we can do on our own like this beautiful spider did. It about time we stop coming with up with excuses, its about time we man up about our own actions. Life happens, life goes on. Just be responsible for it because one day, if your not, nobody will.
Outstanding blog. The video is horrific but you explore what happened and what you saw in the spider and say something. This is exemplary even if it gives me nightmares. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved the way you described how the female wound her food together. The video you shown about the female spider made me realize that independence can be a beautiful and scary thing. Its a tremendous blog.
ReplyDeleteWell first of all I'm that weird person that loves spiders. /.\ So when I saw what your blog was about i was instantly hooked. I loved the video it was the first time I've seen a spider actually catch and eat its prey so I envy you. I really like the connection to females being independent and think it would be interesting to examine your area closer and see if there is any other nature around there that is also female independent.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the video you posted. I also liked that you included another video because it explained what was going on with the moth and what the spider was doing. It was a good thing that you caught the footage on tape. Add more videos on your next post! :)
ReplyDeleteThis was a really great blog post. I really liked the video you put of the spider. I never really knew that the female spider ate her boyfriend haha. It really hooked me up to want to keep reading more when I saw the picture of the spider then the video. The way how you used humor it this post made it even more entertaining. I can't wait to keep reading more of yours!
ReplyDeleteYour blog post was amazing. I really love how you make art collide with knowledge you just made me want to read more, and how you shared your own video was a great touch.
ReplyDeleteYour blog post was amazing. The way you described the spider doing what it had to do to survive was beautiful. I love how you said that it had to be done and that something like that happening was a thing of nature and not something out of the ordinary. I also loved how you explained the spider's actions and compared it to something we all have to do as people. I am looking forward to looking at what else you find in your backyard.
ReplyDeleteSo far as I can see, your blog is a popular one! I loved yours so much. The in-depth detail you created within the blog and creating a bow tie (Mr. Garton's fancy way of saying wrapping up writing) with what you found in your yard and the responsibility given to it's lifestyle that we have as well is completely amazing. It's obvious we do things differently, but the thing that really fascinated me about your blog is how the Black Widow let's the male spider come upon her presence and mate, and then kills him! Mrs. Farias brought to my attention that that's why they're called WIDOWS. I never knew that throughout my whole life, and I actually never bothered to wonder why either. With that being said, your blog has caught my full attention to thrive on what will happen next!! Things that happen within nature are crazy, and sometimes the things that happen are right beside us. Spiders have an amazing lifestyle, and I'm curious as to what other activities could be going on in your backyard. Great job!! (:
ReplyDeleteYour description is so beautiful! Horrific and terrifying, but beautiful. The video was horrifying but very educational about spiders. I will definitely be staying tuned to your blog.
ReplyDeleteIt is evident you spent a lot of time on your blog by the immense amount of information you provided. I love how you include the video, it is very interesting but hard to watch. I feel terrible for the spider's victim.
ReplyDeleteYour blog post was well written in my opinion. It's neat that you put up you're own video of the spider and the relating it to the National Geographic video. Not many people can actually get that close to a spider especially a black widow! I think it's really cool that you were able to do that.
ReplyDeleteIt's obvious everyone is in love with your blog so you can go ahead and add me to the list. I love every detail you gave, it shows you spent a lot of time to make this perfect, and I love how you caught it on tape! Although I'm not a huge fan of spiders, your blog has me interested in what else you come to find in your backyard(:
ReplyDeleteYour Blog is Top 1 for me! You even caught the action on tape! How amazing and fascinating to watch. I love spiders but not Black Widows.
ReplyDeleteBut I learned so much in your blog. No matter what happens, bad or good, "Life goes on".
