A New Way of Looking

Halloween is getting closer, the sun is setting earlier and the darkness looks brighter. Yes brighter. As I was observing my now naked mystery tree during the day I wondered how it would look in the dark now that it's branches were bald. Challenge accepted, I decided to observe in the dark with a flashlight in hand. I began to observe however I myself was cautious doing it. Soon I began to "Trip myself out" in which I think many of you know what I mean by but I mean that every single little noise I heard had me on my toes ready to run! The branches were scary looking as if  they were extra arms to come get me. The apples on the ground suddenly became my enemy. I couldn't see them so I would step on them and almost trip. I automatically saw myself  in a scary movie, where something or someone would pop out of no where form the corner (which is the darkest spot in my backyard) and chase me! Of course I would trip on an apple right before getting to my door and that would be the end of me. Ignoring that feeling I had I continued. The branches moving in the wind were like two male deer fighting, there horns fiercely moving up, down, left, right and any other way possible to defend themselves. The noise they made while moving sounded as if they were nails against a chalk board,as if is was broken record repeating my name, almost blaming me.

deer horns" Field-notes 10/18
Scary right? However I also found that there was much to be discovered in the dark too. Looking at the hole in my tree with my flashlight I discovered that  Ms. Farias was right when she said that earwigs come out at night. There was many of these near the spider web in the hole of my tree and there was many on the ground too. Now I don't think these creatures are physically attractive but they do seem interesting.

From the same page of where I got the picture on top I discovered that these creatures appear to be scary(especially at night ) but truly are nice little bugs who raise their own family like any another specie  would too.  They mainly feed off of dead or living insects or mosses. During the day, my mystery tree and the earwigs aren't so scary. However now that I see how the dark can change my opinion on them , I have found a new way of looking at things. Just because they seem ugly or scary in the dark doesn't mean they truly are. Just because a problem seems to be the end of the world today doesn't mean it will be tomorrow. When there's a problem, a situation or something in general I don't like I will use my flash light and show some light in there to make the dark brighter.

  1. I've really enjoyed reading you're blogs they're always so interesting to read because I learn something knew. What a great idea to observe your tree at night! You do see different creatures a night rather then in the day. I remember I use to grab earwigs when I was younger. They're really interesting bugs, I can agree.

  2. I love your great idea of observing your tree at night and how you were able to find earwigs in it. Now I would want to observe my baby niece at night for this project. When I was a kid, I once attempted to grab an earwig and it had stung me.

    1. Thanks and you should observe her at night, maybe she does something totally unexpected! Ouch, just thinking about the stung hurts me!

  3. Now it's hard to observe the tree at night because it's dark! I'm also observing my tree but I haven't found anything other than spiders! Maybe it's because it's in front of my house and it's noisy. I like your blogs and I agree with Sergio, I learn something new every time! I used to grab the earwigs too.

  4. I get the feeling of being scared especially at night. Like when I go to take the trash out I run and come running back. And I have a lot of those earwigs in my backyard and they look scary but actually aren't. And we shouldn't assume things are ugly even thought they scare the crap out of us.

  5. Your description of the tree at night reminded me of Sleeping Beauty as she's running through the forest and the trees are trying to grab her.
PS> I still think earwigs are creepy.

    1. I've never seen sleeping beauty but it did also remind of snow white in the begining. That part always got to me when I was little. PS> I don't blame you, if those creatures were a little bigger I would not get near them at all!

  6. I can connect with when you say "Trip myself out," on so many different levels. The reason I say this is because I'm always saying "wow that was trippy," literally every single day that comes out of my mouth for some reason I think it's becoming a habbit it happens too often. I think you're very courages to go out during the night time where you're accompanied by bugs (ear wigs) those bugs absolutely terrify me and to think about those creatures during the night is just not a good combination for myself but you on the other hand can tolerate them so that's very interesting. Your blog is by far one of the best I've seen keep up the great work!

  7. This was a great blog, I really enjoyed it! It's amazing how the night can change the perspective of your observation because of how your mind plays tricks on you.

  8. I never knew that earwigs looked different from being male and female. Everytime I saw one they looked the same to me. Next time I see one I want to check to see what gender it is. Your blog is amazing, and very interesting and informative. Thank you.

  9. I like how you explained your fear while you were outside and all the things that were going through your mind.
